On June 1, 2020, the General Customs Department of China confirmed that Russian beef producers certified in January 2020 have gained right to supply chilled beef to the territory of the People's Republic of China. Previously, the given companies had the ability to export frozen beef only.

The chilled beef exports must meet requirements of the Protocol on Inspection, Quarantine and Veterinary and Sanitary Requirements for the Export of Russian beef to China and be accompanied by a veterinary certificate on the export of beef from Russia to China.

According to USMEF, consumption of premium beef have been very limited in the domestic market due to low disposable income, decreasing purchasing power and general attitude of the consumers towards beef (flashback to historical dairy cattle breeds).
Moreover, COVID 19 pandemic and quarantine measures have severely affected main market of premium beef – HRI sector.
It is very difficult to estimate what the shipping volumes will be but China (currently Russia overall export just 9,000 MT versus 370,000 MT in beef imports) but China market is considered by market players as a very promising one. Russian National Meat Association says that if Russia ships 10,000 MT of its beef to China – it will be a strong showing.
