Animal husbandry in Moldova is dying. Over three decades, the number of cattle has decreased almost nine times: from more than a million to 124 thousand head. Of the two million pigs, less than four hundred thousand head remained, and sheep and goats - less than seven hundred thousand.

As a result, meat production fell from more than five hundred thousand Mt to less than two hundred thousand Mt. The leather industry has ceased to exist.

As for the number of livestock in 2020, as of October 1, in the Republic of Moldova there were 115 thousand heads of cattle (-15.7% y-o-y), of which 14.5% - on farms, including husbandry farms, and the rest - in households.

The number of sheep and goats was 634.2 thousand head (-17.4% y-o-y), pigs - 412.2 thousand head (-2.5% y-o-y), poultry (at fowl farms) - 3.797 million (-17.9%).
