After being down 31% year-over-year in May at 62,123 mt and down 33% yoy in June at 60,469 mt, July beef muscle cut exports rebounded to 83,536 mt, the highest since March but down 7% (or -6,200 mt) from last year.  Compared to last year, exports were higher for China/HK (+2,000 mt), Canada (+1,200 mt), Taiwan (+520 mt), and the EU (+300 mt), while exports were lower to other regions: Mexico (-6,600 mt), Middle East (-780 mt), Korea (-610 mt), South America (-610 mt), Caribbean + DR (-560 mt), ASEAN (-420 mt), Japan (-330 mt), and Central America (-250 mt).  Exports to Japan (23,781 mt, -1%) were the highest since April, and exports to Korea (23,587 mt, -3%) were the highest since last July.  Exports to Taiwan (5,989 mt, +10%) were the highest since last August and were the fifth highest monthly volume on record.  Exports increased to HK (5,975 mt, +14%), and exports to China (2,163 mt, +144%) were record-large, up from the previous record of 1,807 mt set in December.  Exports to Canada (8,886 mt, +15%) surpassed year-ago levels again in July, and although exports to Mexico (6,001 mt, -52%) were up sharply from April – June, exports were still down over 50% from last year.  Exports to the Philippines (843 mt, -10%) and Indonesia (780 mt, -11%) were the highest since March but remained down year-over-year, while July exports to Vietnam (686 mt, -12%) were the second lowest monthly volume so far this year.  Exports to Chile (656 mt, -41%) and Colombia (164 mt, -42%) rebounded from the May and June lows but remained off year-ago levels.  Exports to Guatemala (343 mt, -3%) and Panama (127 mt, -35%) rebounded somewhat in July, but exports to Costa Rica (78 mt, -62%) slowed further.  Exports to Trinidad and Tobago (227 mt, +89%) were the highest since 2016, while exports to other Caribbean markets (except the Bahamas at 134 mt, -59%) and the Dominican Republic (192 mt, -69%) started to rebound in July.  Like April – June, July exports remained well below year-ago levels to the Middle East: United Arab Emirates (98 mt, -71%) and Kuwait (36 mt, -87%).

Beef variety meats were the highest since March at 23,762 mt in July, down 16% from last year (or -4,400 mt) after being down 16% in April, down 38% in May, and down 34% in June.  July beef variety meats were higher than last year to the Middle East (+680 mt), China/HK (+590 mt), Canada (+120 mt), and Central America (+40 mt), while exports were lower to Japan (-2,300 mt), ASEAN (-1,200 mt), Mexico (-860 mt), Africa (-530 mt), South America (-460 mt), Caribbean + DR (-330 mt), and Korea (-110 mt).  Exports to Mexico (7,325 mt, -10%) continued to rebound from the May low, and exports to Egypt (4,802 mt, +16%) were the highest since February and were above year-ago levels for the first time since January.  Exports to Japan (4,758 mt, -33%) were the highest since last November but were below last July’s large total.  Exports to Hong Kong (1,204 mt, +52%) were the highest since April, and exports to China (187 mt, up from 15 mt last year) were the second highest since the market reopened after 223 mt in June.  Exports to Korea (802 mt, -12%) were up from the May low, while exports to Canada (692 mt, +20%) have been higher all year.  Exports to South Africa (746 mt, -60%) slowed to the lowest level since January (but were up 61% ytd with strong Feb-June volumes).  Exports to Angola (530 mt, +168%) were the highest since November, and exports to Cote d’Ivoire (252 mt, up from 0 mt) were also higher year-over-year.  Exports rebounded somewhat to Indonesia (548 mt, -64%) and the Philippines (253 mt, -46%) in July.  Exports to Peru (370 mt, -49%) slowed after May and June exports were at the highest level since 2017, while July exports to Chile (302 mt, +190%) were the highest since March 2019.  July exports to Jamaica (208 mt, -46%) slowed to the lowest level since January. 

January – July beef and variety meat exports totaled 698,907 mt, down 9% or -68,000 mt from last year.  Exports were higher to Canada (+7,700 mt), Africa (+6,400 mt), China/HK (+1,060 mt), and the Russia region (+25 mt), while exports were lower to Mexico (-35,100 mt), the Middle East (-12,500 mt), Korea (-10,900 mt), Japan (-5,600 mt), ASEAN (-5,250 mt), Caribbean + DR (-5,100 mt), South America (-3,300 mt), EU (-2,900 mt), Taiwan (-1,500 mt), and Central America (-990 mt)  

July beef exports accounted for 10.8% of production and 12.9% when adding variety meats, as compared to 11.8% and 14.4% in July 2020.  January – July exports accounted for 10.9% of beef production and 13.2% when adding variety meats, down from 11.6% and 14.2% last year. 

July beef export value per head of fed slaughter averaged $280.40/head, down $28.07/head or -9% from $308.47/head for July 2019.  January – July export value per head averaged $297.21/head, down $15.47/head or -5% from $312.69/head last year.
