France confirms case of bovine brucellosis

The French Ministry of Agriculture and Food confirmed a cattle case on 9 November at a dairy farm in Haute-Savoie.

Brucellosis has not been reported on households or farms in France since 2005. Since 2012, there has been a resumption of outbreaks of infection only among populations of ibex.

Brucellosis in animal husbandry is a disease that leads to the compulsory slaughter of livestock in accordance with the EU Regulation.

The infection can be transmitted to humans after consuming fresh raw dairy products from infected animals. It can also be transmitted through direct contact with infected animals.

The Ministry reports that epidemiological investigations are currently underway. Farmers will be compensated for their losses in accordance with European and national regulations.

In Russia, foci of brucellosis were regularly detected in 2019. That year, brucellosis of cattle was found in the Tambov, Orenburg, Rostov regions, as well as the Primorsky, Trans-Baikal and Khabarovsk Territories.
