September beef muscle cut exports totaled 92,080 mt, down 4% or -3,650 mt from last year. Compared to last year, beef muscle cut exports were higher to ASEAN (+1,470 mt), Mexico (+250 mt), the Middle East (+180 mt), EU27 + UK (+140 mt), and Caribbean + DR (+80 mt). Exports were lower to Taiwan (-1,400 mt), Japan (-1,390 mt), Korea (-1,240 mt), South America (-950 mt), Canada (-360 mt), China/HK (-280 mt), and Central America (-40 mt). Exports to the ASEAN region (4,110 mt, +56%) were higher than last year driven by the Philippines. September exports to the Philippines (1,850 mt, +193%) reached the fourth highest volume after April, June, and August 2022. Through September, beef muscle cut export volume to the Philippines has surpassed all past annual totals making this a record year for exports to the Philippines. Exports to Indonesia (920 mt, -35%) slowed, while exports were higher to Vietnam (980 mt, +373%). Exports slowed slightly compared to last year to Korea (21,410 mt, -5%) in September. Exports to Mexico (7,660 mt, +3%) were higher year-over year with the third highest level this year. Exports to South America (740 mt, -56%) slowed to the lowest level since June 2020, and exports to Central America (1,210 mt, -4%) were the second lowest level this year. Exports to the Middle East (1,300 mt, +16%) were higher year-on-year but hitting the second lowest level this year. Exports to Qatar (350 mt, +227%) were the highest ever recorded. Exports to Taiwan (3,890 mt, -26%) slowed in September. Exports to the EU27 + UK (1,610 mt, +10%) were higher year-over-year, while exports to Japan (20,420 mt, -6%) slowed to the lowest level since February. Exports to the Caribbean + DR were higher year-over-year (1,770 mt, +5%), while exports to Canada (7,170 mt, -5%) slowed to the lowest level since February 2021. Exports to China/HK (20,550 mt, -1%) slowed slightly from a year ago with exports to China (17,540 mt) being steady from a year ago (but the lowest since February) and exports to Hong Kong (3,010 mt, -10%) slowing, but the highest volume since November 2021.

September beef variety meat exports totaled 23,410 mt, down 16% or -4,500 mt from last year. Exports were higher than last year to China/HK (+1,460 mt), Canada (+420 mt), ASEAN (+190 mt), Africa (+160 mt), and Caribbean + DR (+50 mt). Exports were lower to Japan (-4,060 mt), Middle East (-1,950 mt), Egypt (-1,900 mt), Mexico (-460 mt), Central America (-240 mt), South America (-30 mt), and Korea (-10 mt). Exports to China/HK (2,970 mt, +97) were higher year-over-year. Exports to China (2,340 mt, +164%) were the sixth highest volume recorded, while exports to Hong Kong were steady year-over-year. Exports to Canada (840 mt, +101%) were higher year-over-year, but exports slowed to Japan (4,100 mt, -50%). Exports to Egypt (2,620 mt, -42%) slowed to the lowest level since August 2021. Exports to the Philippines (480 mt, +604%) were higher year-over-year, but exports slowed to Indonesia (490 mt, -36%). Exports to Cote d’Ivoire (540 mt, +411%) were the highest since September 2018 and exports to Angola (300 mt, up from 0 mt) were the highest since May 2021, while exports to South Africa (390 mt, -51%) were lower year-over-year. Exports to top market Mexico (7,750 mt, -6%) and exports to Korea (710 mt, -1%) were lower year-over-year. Exports to Caribbean + DR (600 mt, +10%) were higher year-over-year. Exports to Jamaica (320 mt, +11%) were higher year-over-year and exports to the DR (170 mt, +79%) were the highest since March 2020. Exports to Central America (230 mt, -52%) and South America (1,160 mt, -3%) were lower year-over-year. Exports to Chile (120 mt, +54%) were higher year-over-year, while exports to Colombia (250 mt) were steady and exports Peru (780 mt, -8%) slowed from last year but were the second highest total so far this year.

January – September beef muscle cut + beef variety meat exports totaled 1.120 million mt, up 4% or +40,760 mt from last year. Exports were higher to China/HK (+40,330 mt), Korea (+6,540 mt), EU27 + UK (+5,680 mt), ASEAN (+5,040 mt), Taiwan (+4,780 mt), Middle East (+4,240 mt), Caribbean + DR (+4,010 mt), Canada (+1,300 mt), and Central America (+320 mt). Exports were lower to Mexico (-15,200 mt), Japan (-9,660 mt), Africa (-4,550 mt), and South America (-2,080 mt).

September 2022 beef exports accounted for 12.1% of production and 14.1% when adding variety meats, compared to 13.0% and 15.7% in September 2021. January – September 2022 beef exports accounted for 13.2% of production and 15.4% when adding variety meats, compared to 12.8% and 15.1% for January – September 2021. 

September beef export value per head of fed slaughter averaged $418.67/headdown 6% or -$28.79/head from $447.46/head in September 2021.  January – September 2022 beef export value per head of fed slaughter averaged $465.48/head, up 20% or +$76.40/head from $389.08/head for January – September 2021.
