Ukraine increased exports of frozen beef

Ukraine increased the volume of frozen beef exports in May, but the supply of live cattle and chilled beef decreased. This is reported by the Association of milk producers with reference to preliminary data from the state statistics service.

In May Ukraine exported 529 metric tons of live cattle, which is 35% less compared to April and 350% less compared to May 2023. Revenue amounted $776 thousand (-54% by April, -438% by May 2023). All supplies were sent to Lebanon. In January – May 2024, Ukraine exported 3.76 thousand metric tons of cattle (-174%) worth $6.36 million (-159%).

At the same time, the volume of chilled beef exports in May amounted to 241 metric tons (-40% compared to April, +73% compared to May last year). Cash revenue for the delivered goods amounted $1.46 million, which is 46% less than a month earlier, and 84% more than in April last year. About 75% of the exported meat was supplied to Turkey, 17% to Lebanon, and 8% to Jordan. In January – May 2024, Ukraine exported 884 metric tons of chilled beef worth $5.53 million, which is 90% more in natural volumes and 94% more in monetary terms compared to last year.

Natural exports of frozen beef in May amounted to 1.61 thousand metric tons, which is 22% more than in April and 54% less compared to May 2023.  Revenue was $6.34 million (16% more than in April and 58% less than in May). About 39% of the exported red meat was supplied to Azerbaijan, 26% to China, and 9% to Uzbekistan. In January – May 2024, Ukraine exported 6.73 thousand metric tons of frozen beef worth $28.35 million, which is 41% less in natural volumes and 33% less in monetary terms compared to last year's period.

In May 2024, Ukraine reduced the import of live cattle to 600 metric tons from the Czech Republic, which is 55.4 metric tons less compared to April. Imports of chilled beef amounted to 12 metric tons (+21%) and frozen beef – 278.4 thousand metric tons (-12%). Red meat was supplied to Ukraine from the EU, Argentina, Australia and New Zealand.

In May, the balance of foreign trade in cattle and beef was positive and amounted to $7.1 million.
