Strong demand for American beef in Taiwan

While American beef exports to Taiwan set a new value record last year ($668 million), volume down slightly from the previous year. But in 2022, the market set a fast pace, with beef exports up 45% in volume in April (nearly 26,000 metric tons) and 85% in value ($313.4 million).

Strong demand for American beef in Taiwan

Joel Haggard, US Meat Export Federation Senior Vice President for Asia Pacific, explains that it has taken some time for Taiwanese buyers to get used to American beef gaining greater access to the Chinese market, where many of the same cuts enjoy more demand. As beef supplies are expected to decline in the second half of 2022, Taiwanese importers are now more active than ever in buying American beef.

Retail demand for American beef in Taiwan is extremely strong, driven by large stores such as COSTCO as well as local supermarket chains. Haggard also notes that during the COVID pandemic, small butcher shops have grown in popularity, with many of them setting up e-commerce platforms to attract new customers. As for the catering sector, the pandemic has definitely affected restaurant attendance, but not to the same extent as in neighboring regions such as China and Hong Kong.
