State support programs did not help increase the volume of meat production in Armenia

State funding to increase livestock in the Republic of Armenia turned out to be ineffective, said Doctor of Agricultural Sciences Ashot Hovhannisyan, commenting for Sputnik Armenia on the fall in meat production.

State support programs did not help increase the volume of meat production in Armenia

According to the Statistical Committee of Armenia, meat production in the country in 2022 decreased by 5.5% in volume compared to 2021. In particular, the production of beef, pork and poultry decreased.

The decline in meat production is associated with a reduction in the number of livestock, expert said.

"The number of cattle alone has decreased by more than 50 thousand heads. This is alarming. In the past, it was possible to ensure stability and even slight growth in this industry. If normal conditions can be ensured, then the number of livestock can increase by about 10 thousand heads a year" , says the expert.

Programs for the construction of smart barns or the purchase of livestock as part of state support programs, according to him, did not have a positive impact on the production of meat and meat products. ".

The livestock import support program has also been unsuccessful due to administrative and financial barriers in the form of collateral. Therefore, many farmers have not received the necessary cash loans,” Hovhannisyan explained.

For the normal care of imported animals, working capital is also needed. The government was ready to invest a large amount in this, but, unfortunately, the envisaged funds were not fully used.

In addition, there are serious problems with pastures, especially in the border areas. All this leads to a reduction in livestock and a decrease in the production of meat products," the expert said.

He added that the growth in mutton production is the only encouraging indicator.
