The Ministry of Agriculture proposes to clarify the rules for marking meat

The draft amendments were developed by the ministry and presented for discussion on the regulation.gov.ru portal. The project proposes to establish the limits of permissible deviations in the content of proteins, fats and carbohydrates when specifying information on the nutritional value of products. Thus, the protein content can be “at least 80% of the value indicated in the product labeling”, and fats and carbohydrates – “no more than 120% of the value indicated in the product labeling”.

As follows from the explanatory note to the project, such changes are necessary, considering “the variability of the composition of meat and slaughter products, the working conditions of the meat industry enterprises, the presence / absence of the possibility of strict standardization of chemical composition indicators”.

The developers of the document cite foreign experience as an example. US law states that an average nutritional value must be reported. In this case, deviations are allowed. Regulatory authorities in the United States do not make claims if the protein content is higher and the fat content is less than indicated on the package.
