Kazakhstan bans livestock exports to stabilize the domestic meat market

The country's government aims to stabilize prices in the domestic meat market, as a 15% increase in beef prices has been reported in the first 10 months of the year.

Meat processors have also complained about low levels of loading in slaughterhouses (50%) and the volume processed for the first 10 months of 2021 stood at 173,000 tons, representing just 18% of the livestock output.

There is also an increase in the export of live animals. For 10 months of this year, 161 thousand heads of cattle were exported, or 5.6 times more than in 2020, the export of small ruminants increased 6.7 times and amounted to 112 thousand heads. At the same time, by the end of this year, the export may amount to about 200 thousand heads of cattle.

Live animal export ban is to stay in place until June 2022.
